Convictions Rare In Reports Of Campus Sex Crimes June 17, 2011 Author: Mr. Safety @ 7:57 pm Hello Mr. Safety here again, Todays post is about an “ALARMING TREND” According to a Chicago Tribune survey of several Midwestern universities Women who report sexual violence on college campuses seldom see their accused attackers arrested and almost never see them convicted. The survey of six schools in Illinois and Indiana found that police investigated 171 reported sex crimes with 12 resulting in arrests and four convictions since fall 2005. Only one of the convictions stemmed from a student-on-student attack,the most common type of assualt. The rate of arrests and convictions is far below the average for rapes reported nationally. The trend leaves an untold number of college women feeling betrayed and vulnerable, believing their allegations are not taken seriously. The Tribune findings also raise fresh questions about the way college administrators and law enforcement handle the allegations, even as the Obama administration calls attention to the issue with a series of initiatives and investigations aimed at better protecting students from sex crimes. Three of the six schools surveyed had ZERO convictions from their 63 reported cases. By their very nature, campus sex crimes are difficult cases to investigate and prosecute. They often involve alcohol and conflicting accounts on whether the physical interaction was consensual, making it difficult for law enforcement to sort out the truth. I say this with a very heavy and saddened heart, as a father to a female college grad and as a father to a daughter entering her junior year of high school 2 years away from going to college. This is a problem I do not want her to be a victim of. We send our kids away for a better education and they get their purity taken and no justice. We have to be proactive as parents. Why because it is occuring in areas long thought to be safe from violent crime. Without food and water we will die. Without shelter from freezing cold or searing heat we may die. The third most important basic human need is security, the preservation of our own lives. That self preservation instinct is as old and basic as life itself. Fear of real or potential threats to our well being cause people to question their ability to protect themselves, and that’s a problem.
